Women's inheritance and gender equity in Islam

Women's inheritance and gender equity under Islamic Law by Sheikh Nuruddeen Lemu

It is often said that under shariah law, a woman's inheritance is half that of a man. This is said to be a clear indication that in Islam, women are inferior and oppressed. This is a misconception.

Under shari’ah law, there are over 25 circumstances when a oman’s inheritance would be equal to or more than that of a man’s, or a woman would get a share of the bequest and a male relative would not be entitled to any inheritance; there are only four circumstances when a woman’s share of inheritance will be half of a man.

The generation to which the heir belongs and the degree of consanguinity between the heir and the deceased are stronger factors in determining the share of inheritance than gender.
